Super College celebrates WorldSkills Excellence

City of Glasgow College has formally congratulated the students who competed in the WorldSkills UK Skills Show National Finals in November at special Awards Ceremony held at the college's City campus.

The students' outstanding efforts ensured the college regained its top spot in the UK medal table.

The team of 15 brought home three gold, three silver and two bronze medals together with a Highly Commended. This included a first ever gold in the Inclusive Skills competition, courtesy of catering student, Iain Hanna.

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Glasgow College, said:

“Our WorldSkills Academy Celebration of Achievement recognises the talent, determination and sheer hard work of our students who triumphed at what is the UK’s largest skills and careers event. It is thanks to their endeavour that we are once again the Number One College in the UK for skills.

“As WorldSkills Ambassador for Scotland I am proud to champion and nurture Scottish success which will ultimately improve national skills standards and deliver economic growth and improved employment prospects for our students.”

HND Confectionary students Victoria Cox and Rebecca Ward won silver and gold respectively in confectionary and were delighted to be recognised at the ceremony:

“We received our medals at the UK Skills Show but it was great to have our achievements recognised within the college”, said Rebecca.

“Training and taking part in these skills competitions makes you realise what you are capable of, and it’s also helped with my decision to become a chocolatier,” said Victoria.

“Being part of the WorldSkills training process has added enormously to what I have learned so far on my course and given me valuable experience which I can take with me into a job. It’s also helped me focus on what I want to do when I finish college in June and that is to become a pastry chef,” added Rebecca.

During the ceremony each student was presented with a certificate and badge to formally acknowledge their success.

The results from the UK Skills Show mean that 11 competitors from Scotland have secured a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Kazan, Russia in 2019. Three of those students are from City of Glasgow with eight from other Scottish colleges including Fife, Dundee & Angus and New College Lanarkshire.
