Super College dominates at Craftex 2017

City of Glasgow College enjoyed another outstanding performance at the annual Craftex Awards, winning 28 of the 53 categories.

Three of the talented students also took the top prizes with Kerry Connolly, HND 3D Design, taking the overall Gold Medal for her detailed equinoctial ring dial in the model making category.

Kerry said:

“It was a huge surprise and honour to win the Gold Medal. It's a great achievement which is all down to the continued support from both my lecturers, Simon Atkinson and David Allan.”

Sharon Le Marinel, HND Art Glass Production/Art Glass Design, took the Deacon Convener's Design Prize for her striking stained glass panel, while this year’s Quilter Cheviot Award for Excellence and Innovation went to HND Furniture Craft and Design student, Sam Lauriston, for his stunning set of bedside tables made from recycled timber.

City of Glasgow College Principal and Chief Executive, Paul Little, said:

“A huge amount of effort goes into preparing our students for this competition, and to win almost two thirds of the categories is truly outstanding. Maintaining such a high standard of entries reflects the hard work and dedication of our students and their teachers, and underlines our college ethos to let learning flourish through inspiration, excellence and innovation. Our congratulations go to all involved.”

Barbara Aitkenhead, Curriculum Head, Design & Drama, said:

“We are absolutely delighted with the quality and quantity of our prize winning haul. Craftex showcases the best in art, design, crafts and technical skills from Glasgow's colleges. The competition has been recognised by UK Skills as an outstanding national event which we are proud to take part in each year. We have great team of talented staff and students, all of whom value this important and well deserved recognition.”
