Three in a row for Super College Chefs

A team of five HND professional cookery students from City of Glasgow College has won the prestigious Atlantic Cup trophy for the third time in a row.

Team City took on Team USA from Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland in the culinary challenge held in Scholars training restaurant at the college’s award winning City Campus.

The competition tested the two teams to create and serve a three-course meal, with each course containing a specific Scottish ingredient chosen by the organisers. Their dishes were then judged on details such as quality, presentation and ingenuity of courses, by celebrity chefs’ Jacqueline O’Donnell and Jimmy Lee, and by around 30 guest diners using scorecards.

Following a tough, close run competition, Team City took the title. City of Glasgow College students Jordan McKenzie, Erin Sweeney, Ance Krisdone, Andreau Talla, and Sophie Roxburgh wowed the judges with their hot smoked salmon, charred leek, caramelised apple and watercress, followed by roe deer with parsnip, roast onion, ceps and potato terrine and rounded off with blackberries with a blackberry curd, milk sorbet and macarons.

Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive at City of Glasgow, said:

“It was a pleasure to welcome our colleagues from Anne Arundel Community College back to Glasgow for this exciting event. It offers our very talented culinary students a unique opportunity to both excel and to experience a cultural exchange, build confidence and hone their skills.

“In this increasingly global culinary arts world, our students need to stand out against the competition and we had two of the finest culinary academies in the world competing. There can only be one winner but all the students taking part should be very proud.”

Gary Maclean, who looked after Team USA during their visit, said:

“It was great to have our American colleagues join us at City and to  repay the hospitality they showed us last year. We are delighted to have retained the trophy, our students certainly did us proud working against very stiff competition and in an incredibly pressurised setting.”

The Atlantic Cup Challenge is an annual competition between the two colleges and alternates between Scotland and the USA each year. Now in its third year, the competition has been won by the team from City of Glasgow each year since it began.
