Modern Apprentice opportunities target gender inequality

Over 300 modern apprenticeship opportunities were on offer to aspiring female STEM and construction professionals at a recruitment event held recently at City of Glasgow College.

Hosted in partnership with EQUATE Scotland and Skills Development Scotland, the inaugural event was part of the college’s on-going commitment to addressing the under representation of women in these areas.

Douglas Morrison, Curriculum Head of STEM Industry Academies at City of Glasgow College said:

“We recognise that it is important to provide support early on to make sure our students have access to clear vocational pathways into employment, and this is particularly important for under-represented groups. Events such as this are vital in ensuring that modern apprenticeships are as inclusive as possible as we continue to support Scotland’s developing workforce.”

Employers from a range of organisations including BAE Systems, Graham Construction, CITB, Scottish Water, Interserve, GE, GTG, Plexus, TELL and CompanyNet attended and offered advice and guidance, and took part in discussions with students from colleges and schools across Glasgow.

With only 1% of construction and 6% of modern apprenticeships being taken up by women, it is crucial that we work with employers to reach out to girls and women with the talents and ambitions to be the future of STEM. At this event over 300 opportunities were showcased and we hope this will translate into more women pursuing these careers."

Karen Murray, Head of National Training Programmes Development at Skills Development Scotland (SDS), said:

“SDS is committed to working with partners and employers to improve equality and diversity in Modern Apprenticeships. It’s important to ensure everyone has the same access to opportunities no matter their background.

“The information on offer as part of this recruitment event was all about encouraging more women to consider a career in STEM and construction and, ultimately, improving access to Modern Apprenticeships.”

The event was part of a larger ongoing project which aims to encourage women into modern apprenticeships and further planned activities include one to one support for young women modern apprentices, a mentoring blueprint to increase retention of women MAs across Scotland, and helping ensure employers have an inclusive workplace for young women.
