City Chefs win prestigious Culinary Title

CoGC win Country Range Student Chef Challenge

Three City of Glasgow College student chefs have taken the top title at this year’s Country Range Student Chef Challenge.

The HND Professional Cookery students, Jordan McKenzie, Erin Sweeney and Lee Christie took on some fierce competition at what is reputed to be the UK’s most prestigious student cook-off.

The annual Country Range Student Chef Challenge – which took place at Hotelympia in London - is the pinnacle for full-time hospitality and catering college students looking to showcase their culinary prowess and creativity, while developing real life catering skills and experience under intense pressure situations.

Willie McCurrach, Curriculum Head for Food at City of Glasgow College, said:

“This is an outstanding achievement for our students. They trained and worked very hard to reach the final, producing an outstanding menu which deservedly sees them winning the title. Chef Lecturer, Robbie Philips, was there to encourage and mentor and our congratulations go to them all.”

Erin Sweeney said:

“I feel so lucky to be picked for the City of Glasgow College team.  It’s such a great opportunity and to win at Hotelympia is unbelievable.  We’re all delighted”

This year’s challenge was Around the World in Three Spices with each team creating, preparing and cooking an appropriately themed three-course, three-cover menu.

Cooking and presenting in front of a live exhibition audience, they had to use a different fresh or ground spice (single or bespoke blend) in each of the courses with the full menu being completed within 90-minutes.

Team City’s award winning menu comprised:

  • Smoked & Spiced Roe Deer, Beetroot, Radish, Grape, Hazelnut Vinaigrette
  • Seared North Sea Coley, Cauliflower; Roast, Pureed & Marinated, Seaweed, Vadouvan Butter
  • Fig, Coriander Salted Pine Nut & Meringue Tart, Frozen Blood Orange Yoghurt

As the victorious team Jordan McKenzie, Erin Sweeney and Lee Christie not only take home the much coveted title but also receive a bespoke set of three Flint & Flame knives each as well as a trip to the 2018 Universal Cookery & Food Festival.
