Saniyah's story

Saniyah Siddique

Saniyah Siddique graduated in November from City of Glasgow College with an HND in Business and chose this particular area to work in with the aim of helping people.

Saniyah completed her studies at the end of June and, after a series of demanding interviews, successfully gained an apprenticeship as Committee Assistant with the Scottish Parliament.

She said: “It is truly a lovely place to work and everyone is friendly and welcoming. I had a few interviews which were quite difficult but each one helped prepare me for the next, and fortunately, the apprenticeship interview had a successful outcome.

“I am now really enjoying putting what I learned at college into practice, learning about the job and developing my skills.”

The 21-year-old from Falkirk has thoughts of one day working in international relations but is really keen to be in an environment where she can make a difference to people’s lives, saying:

“Organisations can help people in many ways and, at the Scottish Parliament, where I am working they help people in making decisions for Scotland and make a positive difference.”

As a Committee Assistant, Saniyah is responsible for ensuring papers are prepared and ready in advance of committee meetings. She contacts attendees to appear to give evidence on a topic, drafts & publishes minutes and agendas and updates the committee webpage.

Her apprenticeship lasts for 12 months and at the end, Saniyah will gain an SVQ Level 3 Business and Administration qualification.

The former Larbert High pupil chose to study at City of Glasgow College because she felt that there was lots of support available. She enjoyed studying marketing, management and communications, as well as making friends and memories.

“My experience at college was one which I will always remember. The Business course was enjoyable and interesting, opening my eyes to possibilities, and my lecturers helped me to prepare for my future by encouraging me to not give up and to always do the best I can.

I may consider returning to further study one day but for now, I love my role at the Scottish Parliament and hope to stay on when my apprenticeship finishes,” said Saniyah.

I am now really enjoying putting what I learned at college into practice, learning about the job and developing my skills.”
