Joinery

This competition has been designed to reflect the role of a joiner and the standards that are expected within the construction industry.

 At the competition competitors will have to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Drawing and setting out.
  • Marking onto timber and sheet material.
  • Cutting a variety of joints to a high standard of accuracy. This could include the use of hand or table routers.
  • Assembling, checking for square, dismantling, reassembling and gluing.
  • Planning to achieve an accurate fit and a high quality of finished product.
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy.
  • Working in a safe manner.

Painting and Decorating

This competition has been designed to reflect the role of a painter and decorator and the standards that are expected within the construction industry.

At the competition competitors will have to demonstrate the following skills: 

  • Working from drawings by taking accurate measurements to determine the materials required for the competition piece.
  • Applying wallpaper.
  • Demonstrating excellent painting skills.
  • Working to tolerances of millimetres.
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy.
  • Working in a safe manner.

Plastering

This competition has been designed to reflect the role of a plasterer and the standards that are expected within the construction industry. Competitors will be required to work with both solid and fibrous plaster.

 At the competition competitors will have to demonstrate the following skills: 

  • Interpreting drawings.
  • Applying plaster with minimal wastage.
  • Positioning and running of moulds accurately.
  • Working to tolerances of within +/- 3mm.
  • Planning for and providing the required tools for the task.
  • Using personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy.
  • Working in a safe manner.

Wall and Floor Tiling

This competition has been designed to reflect the role of a wall and floor tiler and the standards that are expected within the construction industry.

At the competition competitors will have to demonstrate the following skills: 

  • Interpretation of drawings and specification to include plans, elevations, sections and enlarged details
  • All necessary preparations to the wall and/or floor surfaces
  • Measuring, calculating, marking and cutting tiles
  • Fixing decorative tiling to face of plasterboard and/or plywood
  • Knowledge of geometrical processes is an important aspect
  • Jointing and grouting
  • Health and safety is an important element and competitors will be assessed throughout the competition to ensure compliance with safe working procedures
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy
  • Working in a safe environment.
