    Overview

    In the 4th year of this award-winning course you will develop the practical and critical skills needed for a practicing photographer. Guest lectures and workshop sessions play an important role in the course, with opportunities to develop your creative network through a range of collaborative opportunities and industry mentors.

    A self-directed approach to your studies will allow you to tailor your portfolio towards your own photographic interests. During the fourth year of this course, you'll focus on and develop your skills and knowledge towards your own photographic career.

    You’ll work in the state of the art facilities within our new City Campus, including specialist photographic studios, highly specialised photographic equipment (such as medium format digital Hasselblad camera system in addition to Canon EOS DSLR camera equipment).

    You will be trained to the highest level, with an emphasis on developing the skills and experience you'll need for a career in the creative industries.  Throughout your fourth year of study, you'll formulate a well-planned progression route or career pathway.

    Applications for this course should be made through UCAS. 

    This photography degree is delivered by City of Glasgow College and validated by the University of the West of Scotland.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • BA Photography (SCQF level 9) AND
    • You'll be assessed on your professional portfolio.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be asked to take part in a short interview and portfolio review where your key influences and motivations will be discussed.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Extended Essay/Dissertation related to your photographic practice. 
    • Major Photographic Project (you’ll plan and produce practical work throughout the academic year).

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    This course will be delivered through blended learning with demonstrations, lectures and practical activities.

    The course involves project-based learning, with class critiques facilitating feedback and peer review of your work, with active student participation essential in creating a culture of shared practice and mutual support. 

    As an Honours level degree student, you'll be expected to be exceptionally motivated and self-directing in devising and producing course work.

    The course is delivered by highly skilled tutors from a wide range of backgrounds and specialisms. As part of your major project, you'll be required to find and access a professional mentor to supplement feedback on your work by peers and tutors and manage your time and workload effectively.

    Assessment methods

    You’ll receive feedback in a variety of ways on all submitted project work which will be awarded an individual grade. All fourth-year grades contribute to the final classification of your Honours Degree.

    Additional Information

    Materials

    The practical project basis of this course means that you’ll be required to fund and produce a variety of printed images and present these in a variety of formats. The production of your final year showcase materials will also be necessary. The unique nature of such submissions means that it is not possible to estimate any specific costs. 

    Currently, fourth-year students are participating in the “Free Range London” Photography Showcase and the cost of participation should be planned for.
