Overview

On this course, you'll expand on the electrical principles covered in National 5 and Higher level. During the course you'll develop skills over a range of science disciplines.

Many of the course modules are project based with report writing included in second year modules. The course is also designed for higher level technicians in the Electrical Engineering Industry which deals with the production, transmission, distribution and application of electricity and the manufacture, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

Applicants should have a Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering at Graded Unit level ‘C’ or above.

You will be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you will get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you are interested in this subject area.

What you study

Subjects studied may include:-

  • Electrical Installation Design.
  • Mathematics.
  • Utilisation of Electrical Energy.
  • Graded Electrical Project.
  • Transformers.
  • Electrical Power System Management.

Assessment methods

Units will be continually assessed throughout the year. Many assessments will consist of formal reports.

Results of formative and summative assessments will be evaluated and discussed.

After the course

Careers

Many will choose to pursue work as an electrical craftsperson in the Electrical, or Oil and Gas Industries, or wish to gain employment at advanced technical level within the Education/Health Board Sector.

Continuing Study

Every one of our HND level courses has articulation opportunities where you can progress from your chosen course to a related university degree. This is an excellent option for those who may want to come to College at an introductory level, and then work their way towards degree level study.
