  • Overview

    This course will allow you to develop your skills in furniture analysis and practical solutions, through workshop activities. You’ll study the history of furniture design and materials as well as the construction, upholstery and finishing of period furniture. You’ll also restore items of furniture throughout this course.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • NC Furniture Making; OR
    • Higher Craft and Design at Grade C or above AND National 5 English at Grade C or above; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
    • You'll be asked to provide examples of any design and/or making of furniture or 3D work.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    Career opportunities are many and varied. A high number of craftspeople are self-employed or in a partnership, which can be rewarding. There are also jobs in furniture trades and shop-fitting.

    Continuing Study

    On successful completion of your HND you may apply to:

    • Year 2 or 3 of the BA (Hons) Furniture Restoration at Buckinghamshire New University.
    • Entry to a range of other degrees such as Product Design at a variety of educational institutions.
