    This two-year Hospitality Management course helps you to develop the knowledge and skills required to operate effectively at supervisory level in the Hospitality Industry. The first year covers a range of subjects, both practical and theoretical. The second year focuses on providing you with the necessary managerial knowledge and skills for a junior management position.

    This HND is a valuable, industry-recognised qualification for employment in an exciting and ever-changing industry, as well as good preparation for further studies.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Two Highers at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects; OR
    • National Qualification in Hospitality level 6 or related subject; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    * relevant subjects include Administration, Business Management, Economics, English, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, Modern Studies, Psychology or a Science subject.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    Year 2 

    • Accommodation Management.
    • Hospitality Management Accounting.
    • Gastronomy.
    • Graded Unit 2.
    • Managing Human Resources in Hospitality 1 and 2.
    • Managing Hospitality Operations (Level 7).
    • Managing Food and Beverages Operations.
    • Managing Financial Resources.
    • Work Placement.

    We also offer students a variety of paid work placements in some of Glasgow’s top establishments which you can apply for in August, once you've been accepted onto the course. We provide at least 2 industry-specific specific Job Fairs each year with at least 15+ employers attending these events to recruit for part-time and full-time positions. Previous employers attending include: Cameron House Hotel, Dakota Hotels, IHG Hotels, Celinos restaurant, Crerar Hotels, Rannoch Resort, Staff Finders and many more.

    After the course

    Careers

    The course prepares you for employment at junior management/supervisory level in a hospitality department and graduate training schemes with many large organisations.

    We work with key representatives from industry to offer graduate training positions following the successful completion of the HND Hospitality Management, these will be evident throughout the course and at our Industry Job Fairs. In session 2023-24 we started a work experience takeover day with Premier Inn that we hope to expand on in 2024-25 session.

    Continuing Study

    • From Sept 2024 successful students can remain at City of Glasgow College, for 1 further year to achieve (Year 3) BA International Hospitality, Events and Tourism Management Degree awarded by Queen Margaret Univerity.
    • From Sept 2025 successful students will also be able to remain at City of Glasgow College for one further year to achieve (Year 3) BA Hospitality awarded by Edinburgh Napier University.

    In addition, successful students can progress to university (subject to meeting entry requirements of the individual university) at any of the following locations:

    • Year 2 of the BA Hospitality and Tourism Management at Strathclyde University (you must have 2 A grades in your Graded Units).
    • Year three of BA International Hospitality Management at Edinburgh Napier University.
    • Year three of BA  International Hospitality and Tourism Management at Edinburgh Queen Margaret University.
    • Year three of BA International Tourism and Events Management at Glasgow Caledonian University.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    You will be taught in a variety of ways on the course.   Practical subjects will be taught in Scholars' restaurant and bar area and City Bistro.  Theoretical subjects will be taught using various teaching methods including case studies, group activities, exercises and project-based work. 

    Assessment methods

    The course uses a number of assessment methods.  You will be assessed on your practical skills in Scholars' Restaurant and City Bistro.  Other assessments may be home-based in the form of essays, projects and reports.

    All your course materials are on Canvas, our Virtual Learning Environment or in the college library.

    Dress code

    You will be required to wear a uniform in our practical areas  - Scholars' Restaurant .  Information on the purchase of uniforms will be provided when you are offered a place on the course and further guidance will be given at Induction.
