Overview

The course provides specialised training for senior officers on board ship ie. Master, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, or any person working in terminals with immediate responsibility for loading, discharging, care in transit or handling of bulk chemical cargoes. Tanker terminal and ship management personnel will build on previous experience and gain a detailed appreciation of the safety aspects involved in the handling and carriage of chemical cargo.

This training programme is designed in accordance with the revised STCW Code and complies with the latest Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) requirements. It complies with the prerequisites to have your CoC endorsed or to be issued with CoP for advanced training for chemical tanker cargo operations by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

Candidates aspiring to obtain MCA approved certificate should comply with the requirements as per MSN 1866(M)

  • Basic training certificate in oil and chemical tanker cargo operations recognized by MCA.
  • Tanker Fire Fighting certificate approved by MCA.

Note: Candidates eager to learn but not meeting the prerequisites will be issued with a certificate of attendance on successful completion of the course. The college will also assist in the completion of basic tanker training and entry requirements.

What you study

The course will develop competence in:-

  • Ability to safely perform and monitor loading, discharging and care of chemical cargo.
  • Familiarize with physical and chemical properties of chemical cargo.
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards.
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment.
  • Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements.

  • Background of different chemicals carried by sea.
  • Chemical tanker types and their construction.
  • Certification and documentation.
  • Physical and chemical properties of cargo.
  • Hazards of chemical cargo.
  • Tank coatings.
  • Enclosed space entry.
  • Cargo stowage planning.
  • Tank and cargo system washing and preparation.
  • Cargo pumps.
  • Gas detection instrumentation.
  • Health and toxicity.
  • Nitrogen systems.
  • Segregation and compatibility.
  • Case studies and lessons learned.

There are four main outcomes:

  • Outcome 1: The learner understands the chemical and physical properties of cargo and the hazards and control measures associated with carrying chemicals on board tankers.
  • Outcome 2: The learner knows what is involved in the safe operation and monitoring of cargo on board a chemical tanker.
  • Outcome 3: The learner can apply health, safety, and environmental precautions in working on a chemical tanker.
  • Outcome 4: The learner can perform and monitor safe chemical tanker cargo operations in compliance with legislative requirements.

You can apply for an endorsement to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency using the MSF form - Tanker Endorsements MSF 4210 Rev 0721.

Teaching

How the course is taught

The course is taught using modern teaching and learning pedagogy where the students can be in control of their learning. On enrolment, students will be provided with the learning material on Canvas (our VLE) prior commencement of the course.

Thirty-six hours of instructor-led interactive classroom sessions will be delivered using full audio, visual, and multimedia aids. Students will also have hands-on exposure to the use of chemical cargo handling simulator where they can carry out various shipboard operations like inerting, purging, loading, and discharging of the cargo.

The course is taught over 5 days, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm.
