Do you have a disability, health condition or learning difficulty? Do you have social, emotional or behavioural difficulties that impact on your time at college? We are here to help! You may require support from our staff, to enable you to study and do as well as you can during your time at college. The first step is letting us know.
If you have a medical condition or difficulty that has implications for your health and safety; or support needs that may need some time to organise and plan (e.g. a Sign Language Interpreter, or Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan for wheelchair users/students with mobility difficulties) - then it is important that you let us know as soon as possible. This means you will be far more likely to enjoy your time on course and get the support you need in order to succeed.
Every student has individual needs, so we will tailor support to meet your own requirements. You can discuss your particular needs with a member of the team and have this recorded in your Personal Learning Support Plan (PLSP).
The support we can offer students includes:
- Sign language interpreters.
- Electronic note-takers.
- Education Support Workers (for example, to read, scribe and note-take).
- Provision of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).
- Equipment loan (including laptops and digital voice recorders).
- Training and loan of assistive technology.
- Adaptation of teaching, learning or assessment materials.
- Specialist equipment.
- Workshops or one-to-one support in Study Skills; Communications, Numeracy and ICT; Adult Literacy and Numeracy; English Language support.
- Alternative exam or assessment arrangements.
- Sharing appropriate information with lecturing staff.
- Help with applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).
- Partnership working with external agencies who support you.
Disabled Students Allowance
If you are studying towards a Higher National Certificate or Diploma (HNC/D) you may be eligible to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). You can apply for the DSA if you have additional support needs and you have extra costs that are directly related to your course. The Student Development team will offer you advice on applying for DSA, and will help you apply.
If you wish to apply for DSA, you will take part in a Needs Assessment, when your individual needs will be carefully considered by a member of our Student Development team.
Students who receive a DSA, may use this financial support to purchase equipment and software to help them with their course, and to pay for necessary staffing support e.g. a Sign Language Interpreter, Study Skills tutor or Education Support Worker (who may read and scribe for you in class or during assessments).
Assistive Technology and Equipment Loan
If you are not eligible for a Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) but feel you would benefit from borrowing specialist equipment or using assistive technology - the Student Development Equipment Loan Bank may be able to provide free loan of various types of equipment, to help with your studies.
This includes computer hardware or software. For example, we can provide:
- Laptops.
- TextHelp software (including a text to speech output).
- Text magnification software.
- Wrist and arm rests.
- Voice recognition software.
- Mind Mapping software.
- Digital voice recorders.
As well as equipment and software loan we can also provide training in its use and offer on-going student support. However, we cannot guarantee that every application will be accepted or that you will get the equipment you request. Please make contact with the Student Development team in your campus to discuss this further.
