High Voltage Training

Lecturer in the engine room for high voltage training

These courses are for marine engineer officers, electrical or electro-technical officers, engineer surveyors and marine superintendents. The training gives seafarers the essential education and training in high voltage (HV) installations to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements as set out in STCW 2010 Table A-III/1 for electrical, electronic and control systems.

High Voltage Management Level

The approval body for certification of the High Voltage Management Level Course is the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The course is a requirement for Management Level Marine Engineers and ETO officers who may be expected to supervise and/or implement on-board high voltage switching operations as an "authorising officer". The course may also be valuable for Engineer Surveyors, Marine Superintendents and serving marine electricians.

Our 5-day High Voltage Management Level Training course meets the requirements of STCW (Manila amendments 2010) for revalidation of Second/Chief Engineer Officer CoC Reg. III/2 and III/3 (Management Level) ref MIN 423 (M) and for ETO CoC.

Required elements of the course syllabus include extensive practical elements which are carried out on our fully equipped modern high voltage electrical switchboard.

To comply with exacting safety requirements all candidates on the course will be trained in safe isolation procedures, the safe use of testing equipment and switching procedures together with the correct use of Electrical Permit to Work and Sanction Test systems.

During the course each candidate will design and implement switching plans using our PCMD system which will be assessed by qualified instructors to ensure they demonstrate the safe working practices required.

Entry Requirements

This course is designed to meet specific part of the regulatory requirements of Table A-III/2 (management level) of the Annex to the International Convention on Standards of training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended.

Candidates must have either:

  • Prior electrical or electro-technical experience in a shipboard environment;
  • Have completed 12 months sea time as an EOOW; or
  • The course can be completed as part of an initial electro-technical training programme.

Assessment

  • In course assessments consist of multiple-choice tests and practical, in-course, assessments.
  • On completion of training, trainees will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to enable them to:
    •  Understand the functional, operational and safety requirements for a marine high-voltage system.
    • Assist suitably qualified personnel to carry out maintenance and repair of high voltage switchgear of various types.
    • Take remedial action necessary during system faults.
    • Produce a switching strategy for isolating HV system components.
    • Select suitable apparatus for isolation and testing HV equipment.
    • Carry out a switching and isolation procedure on a marine HV system complete with safety documentation.
    • Perform 5kV insulation resistance and polarisation index tests on HV equipment.

Please note: If you are not an EU passport holder, you will require a Student Visitor Visa to attend.
