Friday 23 April 2025

Our cutting-edge Riverside campus hosted a major maritime security conference with a stellar lineup of speakers and panellists, which is impeccably timed given the tense geopolitics right now.

Partnering with Asia Scotland Institute, we hosted Scotland’s first-ever 'Threats to Maritime Trade and the Global Economy’ conference, exploring a wide range of pressing maritime security issues, including piracy, terrorism, illegal fishing, cyber threats, and geopolitical tensions affecting the world’s oceans and coastal communities.

The impressive cast of speakers included:-

  • Lord George Robertson, former NATO Secretary General and UK Defence Secretary;
  • Dr Emily Holland, Research Director & Assistant Professor at the U.S. Naval War College;
  • Professor Basil Germond, Chair in International Security at Lancaster University;
  • Philip Fullerton, Managing Director at Northern Marine; and Professor Ian Gow, chairman of The Japan Society of Scotland and Honorary Professor of Japanese at the University of Edinburgh.
