When you are a student, living at home is definitely the cheapest option. However, if this is not possible and you're looking to move out, or are coming from outside Glasgow, there are plenty of options in and around Glasgow. You can choose to move to a purpose-built student accommodation or rent a flat in the City. Below we've outlined a few things you should consider when researching your accommodation options.
Cost and budget
- What is the weekly/ monthly rent?
- Can you afford it?
- What's included in the rent (heating, electric, laundry wi-fi)?
- Does it require a deposit?
- Is there additional funding available to help with your rent costs?
Location and transport
- How far is the accommodation from college?
- Availability of public transport or walking and cycling options.
- Safety of the area, especially at night.
- Services in the local area e.g. GPs, pharmacy, supermarkets, social venues.
Contract
- What kind of tenancy is it, e.g. individual or joint?
- Do you need a guarantor?
- How long is the contract e.g. 52 weeks or 42 weeks?
- Is there a cooling-off period?
- Is the landlord registered?
Safety
- Does it have a secure entry system?
- Are the surrounding areas well-lit?
- Are there clear fire safety measures and evacuation routes?
Accessibility and wellbeing
- Are there quiet spaces for study?
- Is there pastoral support available with purpose-built accommodation?
- Are there opportunities for social engagement, e.g. pizza nights, movie nights?
- Is it suitable for additional needs e.g. wheelchair accessible, alarms for Deaf/hearing impaired students.
Flatmates and community
- Who will you be living with?
- What are the noise levels like?
- How to manage potential conflict e.g. different lifestyles, study patterns.
