Ian McArthur

My name is Ian Mcarthur and as a photographer, my main focus over the last couple of years has been to use my skills with a camera to document and showcase people and cultures that I find interesting. I particularly enjoy working with Scottish cultures like the Gaelic language as well as alternative subcultures, as they are ones that I also fall into. Using portraiture, I try to create interesting images that both act as art and as a record of the subject that I am photographing.

Project Description

This project, titled “Graffiti Makes Glasgow” was my attempt to capture some behind-the-scenes moments of the making of the art which fills our city, focusing on the artists and not what they left behind. I shot with lots of artists based in and around Glasgow, both in their studios and personal workspaces, as well as on location, painting their throwups and pieces. This work just scratches the surface of a culture and a community in Glasgow, which most people never think of or see beyond the writing left on the walls.
