Jennifer Whyte

My name is Jennifer Whyte, and I’m a photographer based in Glasgow. My photographic work is focused on capturing portraits of people and documenting their environments. Over the course of this degree, my photographic practice has developed and so has my interest in photographing people and their surroundings. Storytelling is something I find very important in images, engaging and telling a bit about the person in the frame. I particularly like working from the studio and also on location to capture a mixture of action shots, intentional camera movements and candid portraits just as seen in my recent advanced major project of Women in Sport.

End of Year Project

This project is a documentary series focusing on women’s sports, particularly football, highland dancing and cheerleading. Sport is still widely a male-dominated field, with women’s representation only recently coming into more focus. These images particularly focus on young women participating in sport, as young women are more likely to drop out compared to men. This series was influenced by my own choice of leaving competitive dancing, a decision I deeply regretted. These images aimed to highlight the importance of teamwork, energy and stamina that goes into each sport, as well as emphasising the importance of young women’s participation in sport for both physical and mental health.
