Lou Thomson
My name is Lou, and I am a Scottish photographer based in Glasgow. My work utilises multiple different genres within the medium, including environmental portraiture, low-light and infrared photography. My identity as a non-binary person has had a big influence on my recent degree work, and this theme of identity is one I often try to explore. By capturing both self-portraits and intimate portraits of others within the Queer scene in Glasgow, often with a strong emphasis on the surroundings they are captured in, I aim to produce work that serves as both a celebration and a statement about the vibrant community that I am proud to be a part of.
End Of Year Show Description
Queer people like myself are so often captured in and associated with the urban environment. With my self-portrait project titled 'The Villager', which was taken in and around Annbank in South Ayrshire, where I grew up, I instead explore the navigation of Queer identity and open expression as someone who comes from a small countryside village. In these rural areas, this kind of expression is seen as outlandish and more of a spectacle, and this is something I attempt to highlight through the obscurity and contrast between myself and a landscape that still holds a very deep importance to me personally.Â
