Overview
This course builds on the skills and knowledge gained in HNC Interior Design allowing you to further develop the creative, analytical, technical and professional skills required for a career in interior architecture and design. This course can also lead to further study and allow access to degree programmes in interior architecture, design and related fields.
You will have the opportunity to work on industry-led projects and real-world briefs critiqued by our industry partners, where you will be encouraged to take part in work experience and secure placements to build relevant industry experience.
You will be encouraged to develop your design thinking skills from sketchbooks to digital form, utilising various packages such as CAD, SketchUp and Abobe CC and more. Our teaching staff - from full-time lecturers to part-time lecturers running active design practices - bring a wide breadth of skills and industry knowledge. They offer you a rich mix of specialist experiences and are committed to supporting you in reaching your full potential as a creative individual. Guest speakers and visiting tutors also offer fresh insights helping us ensure that our studio environments are inspiring and innovative.

Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Successful completion of an HNC Interior Design course or HND1 Interior Design, together with a strong portfolio and excellent reference from a course lecturer.
Additional selection requirements
- You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
- You'll be asked to provide examples of your art and design work.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.
What you study
You'll study:
- Advanced practical application of the design process through a series of challenging and exciting interior projects, which vary in scale and type, including hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, and exhibitions.
- Professional practice.
- Construction & detailing.
- Building Regulations.
- 3D Digital Modelling (CAD).
Including how these integrate with and inform your design projects.
You will also undertake an advanced personal investigation into Design History and context.
Portfolio preparation is also a key focus within HND as students prepare to progress to degree-level study or employment in an Interior Design practice.
After the course

This course can lead to a variety of careers in interior design and architectural practices, CAD, property development, shop and office fitting, museum, and exhibition design.

Teaching
How the course is taught
The course is studio-based with flexible arrangements for digital and manual work, with 2 full days on site and 1 theory-based class online. You will be timetabled alongside peers in the same discipline, sharing observations and ideas about your design directions.
Creativity and exploration are encouraged through digital and analogue methods, with staff ensuring your individual needs and aspirations are met.
You will undergo continual assessment with daily 1:1s with course tutors, during which you will have the opportunity to discuss your progress.
