  • Overview

    The sports therapy course will equip you with the skills required to help prevent injury and rehabilitate clients back to full fitness. The first year of the course focuses heavily on sports massage and will give you an industry recognised qualification on completion. The second year of the course focuses on the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions arising from sporting activity.

    You'll also get the opportunity to work in our sports injury clinic, developing skills in clinical assessment, devising treatment plans and providing physical therapies. You may also be involved in pre and post match and touchline support for sporting events.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 8. 

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Two Highers at Grade C or above in relevant* subjects; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in a Sports related subject; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    *relevant subjects include: English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, P.E, Maths and Geography.

    Additional selection requirements

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
    • The interview will consist of a group task demonstrating teamwork and communication with other interviewees.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Electrotherapy.
    • Plan and Deliver Exercise Rehabilitation.
    • Biomechanics and Movement Patterns.

    After the course

    Careers

    This course prepares you for a career as a sports therapist working freelance, in sports clubs, or as part of a government health initiative.

    Continuing Study

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    The course is taught over 2 x 18 week blocks with 2 exceptions which are 9 weeks long, using a variety of different teaching approaches.  Students are required to attend college for 16 hours per week however it is expected that students will devote another 16 + hours per week to their studies off site.

    Assessment methods

    There are various ways to assess your knowledge & skills, including class-based exams, completion of coursework, such as handing in reports/essays and practical assessments, including working with real clients. A maximum of TWO attempts are allowed for each assessment.

    Materials

    No specialist materials are required, the college will provide access to materials required to successfully complete course.

    Dress code

    Students will be required to buy college uniform which must be worn in all practical classes.  In non practical subjects students may wear smart but casual clothes but no football colours are permitted in any environment.
