    The Hospitality Industry offers exciting career opportunities within hotels, bars and restaurants both nationally and internationally. This NQ Hotel, Restaurant and Bar Operation course will provide you with the practical skills and detailed theoretical knowledge required to undertake a variety of job roles within this industry as well as entry to higher level Hospitality and related courses.

    You will study subjects associated with hotel, restaurant and bar operations, accommodation and reception operations as well as essential knowledge for operating a business. As a team member, you will work within Scholars’ Restaurant one of the college’s commercial outlets to develop your practical skills in Customer Care and Food and Beverage Service.

    The course is delivered by our highly skilled lecturing staff who have a vast amount of relevant industry experience to inspire your learning.

    This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework at level 6.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above including English; OR
    • NQ/NC Hospitality at SCQF level 5; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    Careers

    The course will prepare you for a job in the hotel, restaurant and bar sectors of the hospitality industry.

    Continuing Study

    You can progress to the HND in Hospitality Management after the successful completion of this level 6 course.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    This is a practical course with many of your classes taking place in a practical setting. There are some theory-based units, numeracy and costing, which are delivered in an interactive classroom setting.

    You will be taught practical skills in our two restaurants, the Bistro and Scholars’. You will organise live events and gain knowledge on the making and serving of wines and spirits. Hotel reception skills and hotel housekeeping skills will also be taught.

    Assessment methods

    There are a range of assessment methods which include, multiple-choice questions, practical observation checklist, short report writing and self-study projects.

    Dress code

    You will be required to wear a college uniform when you are being taught in our restaurants. This uniform is provided by the college.
