  • Overview

    Designed to help you build a career as a TV Sound Assistant working in both studios and Outside Broadcasts.  This course is delivered in partnership with BBC Studioworks, QTV, Riedel UK, CVP and FE Live.

    The course tutor is Senior Sound Supervisor Jim Hunter.  The Royal Television Society recognised his Outstanding Contribution to the industry at their 2022 awards for both his remarkable expertise and professionalism and also his commitment to the development of TV craft skills.

    His credits include - The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, BBC Hogmanay Live, The Eurovision Dance Championships, The Weakest Link, All Round to Mrs. Brown’s, The Hit List, Tomorrow’s World Live, Still Game Live at the Hydro, numerous Election programmes, Chewin’ the Fat, T in the Park and TRNSMT, to name but a few.

    The course cost for two weeks of intensive professional training is £1,100.  You will attend college each day from 9am-4pm.

    Financial Support 

    Screen Scotland provides support for individuals working in film and television to access training in this area where there is a recognised skills gap.  Funding of up to 90% is available.  Information and guidelines for Screen Scotland funding.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • HND Creative Industries Television.  
    • HND Sound Qualification.
    • Equivalent demonstrable experience in broadcast, studio or Outside Broadcast environment.

    Additional selection requirements

    • The course tutor will review each application individually.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    • Radio microphones. 
    • Radio in-ear kit. 
    • TV communications. 
    • Connectivity and stageboxes.
    • Radio talkback and walkie talkies. 
    • TV Studio Sound Operations – a typical television studio show. 
    • TV OB Sound Operations – a typical television outside broadcast. 
    • Fault finding. 
    • Working to a timeline.
    • Working with a sound crew.
    • Working with other departments. 
    • Tools of the trade. 

    After the course

    Careers

    There is a recognised skills gap in this area of the industry and those successfully can expect to increase their opportunity to be included in the freelance pool/list of a number of local employers including BBC Studioworks and QTV.

    Continuing Study

    This is a professional level course and successful candidates should consider this as part of their early CPD in the craft of television sound operations and as a solid grounding to develop further skillsets.

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    This is a concise course with lots of information and training compressed into ten days.  We will teach the skills to hit the ground running as a TV Sound Assistant working in both TV studios and on outside broadcast units. 

    This knowledge and skillset will give the individual a solid grounding in television sound operations and allow the participants to build upon this solid foundation. 

    It will require complete engagement and commitment by students to complete the course successfully.

    Classes will be a mixture of lectures, practical workshops using current industry standard equipment, and practical and written assessments with feedback. 

    Assessment methods

    Students’ practical abilities will be assessed through practical tasks.

    Knowledge will also be assessed by responses to questions.

    Comfortable clothing should be worn as there is some practical activity involved in course delivery.
