Overview
This course is designed for non-native English speakers who hold a university degree and who are interested in entering a teacher-training programme at Scottish universities, with the view to pursue a career in primary or secondary school teaching.
All individuals who wish to become a primary or secondary school teacher in Scotland must complete a teacher-training programme. For those who already hold an undergraduate degree, this programme is Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). On successful completion of the ESOL into Teaching course, applicants with an undergraduate degree (admissible to PGDE) will be able to apply for a PGDE programme at various Scottish universities.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Levels 5 and 6.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
SQA National 4 Mathematics or equivalent .
SQA National 5 ESOL (grade A or B) or equivalent.
An undergraduate degree in a subject admissible to the PGDE programme.
Applicants will be required to provide certification for their qualifications when they apply.
Please note, applicants are responsible for checking that their undergraduate degree meets the requirements for entry to university teacher training programmes. Applicants should check this with their university of choice.
Additional selection requirements
If you are not a current ESOL student at City of Glasgow College and you do not have English language qualifications, you may be required to attend for English language level testing.
You will be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you are interested in teaching, or we’ll make an offer based on your application form.
ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Teaching
How the course is taught
The course is taught using a variety of learning and teaching methods. As this is a full-time course, you will have timetabled classes 3 days a week with an expectation that you will study independently for several hours each week.
Assessment methods
For the ESOL component, you will be assessed on listening, reading, writing and speaking. Your assessments include a unit assessment, a preliminary and final exam.
For the Mathematics component, you will sit a preliminary and a final exam.
