The course will introduce you to a wide range of computing concepts and develop skills essential for the 21st century. This course is placed on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 7.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- One Higher at Grade C or above in a relevant* subject AND two National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above; OR
- National Qualification at SCQF Level 6 in a relevant subject such as Computing, Computing: Technical Support, Digital Media Computing or Software Development; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or professional experience.
*Relevant subjects include Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing, English, History, Information Systems, Mathematics or Physics.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

Careers
The HNC in Computer Science provides an excellent platform for careers in areas such as software developer, IT operations, cybersecurity, data analytics roles, or general IT technician pathways.
Continuing study
You can progress to:
- HND Computer Science (Year 2).
- HND Software Development (Year 2).
Progression is subject to successful completion of all units, good attendance, and a positive reference from lecturers. You may also gain entry to a range of year-two university Computer Science or related degree programmes, depending on university entry requirements.
