Overview
Are you curious about how things work, especially the systems that power our homes, industries, and everyday technology? If you’re interested in engineering but haven’t yet decided which branch suits you best, this NC Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Systems course is the ideal starting point. It introduces you to the core principles behind both electrical and mechanical engineering, helping you develop versatile problem-solving skills across two closely connected fields. As employers increasingly value engineers who can confidently understand both systems, you’ll be well-placed to begin building a strong and adaptable career.
This nationally recognised qualification prepares you for entry-level technician roles or progression to further study (see the After the Course section for more information). The course is mainly theory-based but includes practical, classroom-based activities that will help you apply engineering concepts and build confidence in your developing skills. You'll be taught by staff with real industry experience, ensuring your learning is rooted in current engineering practice.
This is a full-time course. A part-time option is available, delivered over two years and studied one day per week, offering flexibility to fit around work or other commitments.
This course is a great launchpad if you:
- Want to build your confidence in engaging with academic learning.
- Haven’t previously achieved results that reflect your full potential.
- Are returning to education after a break.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework at Level 6.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above, including Mathematics (Application of Maths is not accepted) and a Science subject; OR
- National Qualification at SCQF level 5 in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
Additional selection requirements
You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.

After the course
Careers
The course is aimed at providing opportunities for you to progress into continuing study – Electrical, Mechanical or Systems Engineering Apprenticeships or other Engineering Sectors.
Continuing Study
After successfully completing the course, you may progress to:
- Year 2: HNC Electrical Engineering, HNC Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Systems or HNC Industrial Automation Engineering with Robotics (Mechatronics).
- Year 3: HND Electrical Engineering, HND Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Systems or HND Advanced Industrial Automation Engineering (Mechatronics).
- Year 4 Onwards: A University of your choice.
Teaching
How the course is taught
You will be taught through a mix of practical and theoretical classes. The course will be taught in two 18-week blocks with class sessions of two hours duration. You will need to undertake self-study outside timetabled class contact and arrange lab entry for additional practical activities with course study groups.
Assessment methods
You will be continuously assessed by a mixture of written assessment, project work, oral presentation and practical assessment. Each unit will have on average 4 learning outcomes, which will be assessed every few weeks within the 18-week block. All learning outcomes must be passed to gain the credit value (normally 1.0) associated with that unit.
Additional Information
Materials
You will be responsible for supplying your own copy of the recommended course books. You will also be responsible for supplying your own writing and drawing materials along with a scientific calculator.
