Overview
The Beauty Industry offers exciting career opportunities, and this course will provide you with the practical skills and detailed theoretical knowledge required for a wide variety of roles, and/or possible entry to higher level courses.
You'll study a selection of the most popular beauty treatments, plus all the essential related subjects, required to achieve this qualification. Amongst other subjects, you will study make-up, body massage, facials and a variety of popular nail treatments such as gel nail extensions. Work experience is also included, giving you a real insight into a variety of activities involved in the beauty industry.
The course is delivered by our dedicated lecturing team, who have high-level skills and wide experience within the beauty profession.
This course is placed on the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework at Level 6.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements
- Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above; OR
- NC Beauty Care and Make Up SCQF Level 5; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
- Due to European Directive you require to be 16 years of age by 30 September 2024 to undertake this course.

ESOL entry requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

After the course
Careers
This course prepares you for a variety of career opportunities in the Beauty Industry. This may involve employment in beauty salons or spas and could involve the specialisms of nail and eye treatments or make-up. There are also opportunities in retailing, and for self-employment.
Continuing Study
Students can apply to progress to HND Beauty Therapy (SCQF Level 8), HNC Fashion Make-Up (SCQF Level 7), HND Make-up Artistry TV, Film and Theatre (SCQF Level 8).
Teaching
How the course is taught
A variety of learning and teaching methods are used to deliver practical and theory-based subjects, in fully equipped treatment rooms, and IT enabled classrooms.
You'll carry out practical work on a diverse range of clients, and will also be required to model for treatments yourself.
Assessment methods
The course utilises a variety of assessment methods, including practical observation, case study compilation, research projects and closed book theory papers.
Additional Information
Materials
A kit and uniform is required for this course - an order form will be supplied when you have accepted a place on the course.
All other materials for the course will be provided, and students may be given the option to purchase an additional College approved kit for some specialist units.
Dress code
For practical class, the College approved uniform must be worn, with suitable footwear (details will be supplied).
Longer hair must be tied back, no jewellery on hands or arms, and nails must be short and unvarnished.
