  • Overview

    This course has been specially designed to meet the experience and skills required to work within a modern media market across clients and agencies.  It has a strong practical element where you'll have access to industry-standard equipment and kit to research, design and produce a range of digital and social media content across podcasting, radio and filmed/video content.  Your projects will cover factual/news and entertainment developed in our world-class studios.  Throughout the course you will gain practical experience across all main areas of content creation to allow you to produce for a range of objectives, audiences and media.  You'll create your own portfolio from a key creative project and other coursework to showcase your talent to further/higher education and employers. 

    This course will also support your achievement of the new SQA/Qualifications Scotland Film and Screen Awards Level 6. The Film and Screen Awards will focus on developing the knowledge, skills and experience of practical filmmaking and building an understanding of all aspects of film and screen from a practical perspective.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Two National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above, including English; OR 
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    Careers

    You will be able to apply to a wide range of junior posts across media areas where there are content creation experience and skills required.  Areas such as advertising, public relations, marketing, digital/social channels, broadcasting (TV, podcasting & radio) and photography/film.  You will be able to produce a range of content for brands, companies plus commissioning agencies/consultancies, broadcast and news organisations.

    On successful completion of this course with all credits, you may progress onto: -

    • HNC Journalism.
    • HNC Advertising & PR, HNC Marketing.

    You may also consider applying for Year 1 of an HND across our Broadcasting & Media courses. 

    Following HND Year 2 there are currently Honours-level degree courses in Photography and Television at the college.  On successful completion of HN courses, you will also be eligible to apply to several university degree courses with entry to year 1 – 3, depending on the university.  

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    Teaching on this course employs a wide variety of experiences, from tutor-led lectures to individual and group work around a project-based delivery. Emphasis will be placed on a student-centred approach to learning. A wide range of teaching methods are employed to ensure you are engaged with the course, these include real-life case studies, theory-based learning and research.  

    Assessment methods

    Assessment is continuous with a variety of mainly supervised open-book assessments.  There are also a range of projects that will support your application and skills in media.  This course is also assessed through the practical application of soft/hardware and broadcasting kit.
