    The NQ Level 6 Make-up Artistry course is designed for you if you are interested in taking the initial steps to a career in the fast-paced industry of Make-up Artistry.  The technical units build and equip you with skills to expand your creativity and artistic skills through specialist units, unique to becoming a make-up artist. 

    You will be taught by a team of industry experts with a wealth of experience and expertise in make-up counters, film, theatre and fashion photo shoots.  Their expertise will ensure your learning is at the centre of their teaching practice.

    Work experience is an essential part of the course and you will need to secure a work placement.  You may have the opportunity to take part in competitions and industry shows.

    Entry requirements

    Minimum entry requirements

    • Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above; OR
    • National Qualification at SCQF level 5 in Hairdressing or SVQ level 2 Ladies Hairdressing or SCQF level 5 Beauty; OR
    • Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
    • Due to European Directive you require to be 16 years of age by 30 September 2024 to undertake this course.

    • You'll be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you can find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area or we'll make an offer based on your application form.
    • You'll be given the opportunity to show some examples of your work.

    ESOL entry requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses and ESOL Higher or equivalent for HNC/D courses.

    What you study

    Core units/subjects you will undertake are:-

    • Style, Dress and Finish Hair.
    • Wigs and Postiche for the Media.
    • Media make-up Special Effects.
    • Character make-up for TV and Theatre.
    • Styling for a Total Look.
    • Commercial Experience.

    Additional units to make up your award include;

    • Photography: Digital Imaging.
    • Current Creative Make-up Trends.
    • Research Skills.

    • HNC Fashion Make-up (SCQF Level 7).
    • HND Make-up Artistry TV, Film and Theatre (SCQF Level 8).
    • HND Beauty Therapy (SCQF Level 8).

    Teaching

    How the course is taught

    The course will be taught over 2 blocks entailing 11 weeks of learning, teaching and assessment. You will be continually assessed throughout the duration of the course.

    Assessment methods

    The course includes a variety of assessment methods including practical, closed book and portfolio building.

    Materials

    Course materials will be provided by means of a kit to support your studies via college bursary. You will need to supply stationery.

    Dress code

    You are required to wear black clothing of a professional standard.
