Introduction to Construction Skills NQ (Level 5)

This exciting course is an ideal first step towards a career in the Construction Industry. This practical course will allow you to explore a variety of disciplines including woodworking, painting & decorating and tiling. This is an engaging course where you can build real-world skills in our industry-standard workshops.

You will develop your skills and experience of working with woodworking hand tools and associated materials. You will learn how to set out and manufacture a range of elementary woodworking joints and create your own product.

You will learn how to form bands and lines as well as basic brush-grained effects with paint. You will explore how to enlarge and transfer a given design and then paint it using free brushwork. You will practice how to mix different colours to match given paint samples.

You will become familiar with the tools, equipment and terminology that is used in wall and floor tiling. You will discover which fixing and grouting materials are suitable for different surfaces. You will practice fixing tiles to pre-prepared wall and floors.

This course contains a focus on employability skills. You will develop working practices which will enhance your job prospects including good time-keeping, health & safety awareness, team working and carrying out quality checks. You will learn self-evaluation skills and how to adapt your performance in response to feedback. You will also explore industry-specific skills such as interpreting drawings; producing basic materials schedules; and carrying out basic risk assessments.

Entry Requirements

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements you should be interested in a career in the construction industry, have a reasonable level of numeracy and be capable of working at SCQF level 5.

This course would suit students with good communication skills who are willing to work as part of a team. You should be able to act on instructions and be committed to working in a manner that supports health and safety at work.

Progression Pathways

This course will allow you to make a more informed choice of progression within this highly rewarding industry. Graduates of this course will be able to progress onto full-time courses across the Construction department.
