Charles Kelly

My work, The Trinity Triptych, investigates the human psyche through a theatrical figurative perspective, each individual piece representing the stages of Birth, Life & Death, the never-ending cycle. My main inspirations are 4 artists I have admired, Jamie Reid’s iconic punk graphics, Allen Jones fetishistic works, Mothmeister's surreal, grotesque religious figures and Juha Arvid Helminen’s figurative monochromatic dark tableaus. Coupled with a lifelong obsession with youth culture from the 50’s to the mid 80’s, focusing on Punk Rock symbolism and religious iconography, I work in a multimedia practice utilising the many objects I have gathered over the last few decades.

Exhibition Statement

This work consists of three figures in white, red & black, each standing for Birth, Life and Death. I have called it The Trinity Triptych. It encompasses elements of religion, royalty, life cycles, fetishism, totems, punk rock symbolism, tribal youth cults and cinema culture from the past. All combined with my enduring fascination with groups of three throughout history and pop culture, stemming from mythology to the modern day, this disparate bricolage presents various elements that have influenced me throughout my life. Theatricality, Ritual adornment, and presentation, like three surrogates symbolising a surreal inner alternative amalgam.
