Emma Marie
For me, art is a powerful tool for both introspection and meaning-making. It functions as a mode of navigating my inner world and the complexities of contemporary connection. Through emotional expression and vulnerability, I explore the ways in which digital culture shapes and distorts relationships. My work is driven by an endeavour to understand the function of intimacy and identity, as well as the tension between presence and disconnection. In translating personal experience into tangible visual form, I create crucial space for reflection and reckoning in a world that rarely grants us the stillness to look inwards.
Exhibition Statement
This body of work explores the tension between control and vulnerability within a digitally dominated world, where human connection is largely shaped by performance and disposability. Developing from a precise, methodological practice that mirrored online self-curation, my work shifts towards intuitive, emotion-driven gestural making, which reflects the volatile complexity of feeling. Drawing from encounters with emotional disconnection in digital dating, it considers intimacy within the conditions of “liquid modernity,” where, as Bauman suggests, “we can no longer bear anything that lasts.” Resisting this modern proclivity towards impermanence, I use painting as a powerful means to suspend transient emotional exchanges in tangible form.
