Through a multi-disciplinary approach, I explore esoteric aspects of history and their impact on modern-day society and culture. With a specific focus on the origins of the witch trials and witchcraft, I use my creative practice to examine phenomena and the materiality associated with these subjects.
As I have found myself drawn to artefacts associated with folklore and ritual practices, a significant aspect of my practice is recreating and imitating these items to satisfy my curiosity, whilst connecting more deeply with the origins, history, and original intention of these objects.
Exhibition Statement
In the 19th century, it was common for farmers to engage in ritual practices when they believed their livestock to be cursed. A popular ritual involved using a deceased animal’s heart, which would be stuck with nails and pins; this was thought to send the curse back to the source.
Charmed explores the irony of resolving a fear of witchcraft by engaging in witchcraft. The recreation of a protective heart talisman is inspired by my own fascination with museum artefacts and by how the display of an item in a glass case can evoke curiosity because it is inaccessible.
