Peyton Duckworth
I am a visual artist whose primary sources of working are photography, film, and sculpture. My work explores themes of feminism, grief, and religion, bringing significant and current issues to the forefront of my art. Over the last two years of my degree, I have dived deep into feminist ideas and have been making work concerned with understanding the female experience as a whole, through online and offline lenses, looking at issues stemming from the male gaze, oppressive systems within society and using art to express what it feels like to be a woman living through these issues. My work brings together aspects of fine art & sculpture, and meaningful photography and film, creating scenes that convey important societal messages.
Exhibition Statement
My degree show is made up of three components: Ten Hail Mary's and Five Our Fathers - a film playing on loop; two photography prints, and props used in both my photography and film. The film plays on a screen with music and prayer filling the space, and the props and photography prints create an atmosphere to fully immerse the viewer in the theme and the work. The film and photography show a young, religious woman’s mental state slowly deteriorating due to the pressure of traditional religious perfection that is put on women who follow certain faiths. The video cuts back and forth between her wedding day, to her ‘responsibilities’ as a religious wife, and incorporates darker videos of the church and its’ symbols, to show a more disturbing, oppressive side of religion.
