Sean Merrin

I am a Glasgow-based artist whose work focuses on contemporary art and its intersection with unconventional materials and experimental processes. Working primarily in mixed media and the techniques of assemblage, collage and bricolage, my practice grapples with the complexities of materiality and pushes the boundaries of traditional artistic methods. Through this unconventional use of various materials, I aim to challenge viewers and invite them to question their preconceived notions of art and its purpose in society.

Exhibition Statement

Simply Rubbish

A collection of discarded, mass-produced multiples of found objects arranged in a paradoxically anally retentive fashion.

It is a post-minimalist installation featuring work that builds on the explorations of consumer culture done by the likes of Andy Warhol. Post-Minimalism draws from some of the traditional conventions of minimalism but usually has aspects that go away from others. In this case, through materials and concept. The materials used draw from the artist's low socio-economic status and the abundance of waste that is accrued by humanity under advanced capitalism and hyper-consumption. So much so that humanity's presence on Earth will be detectable long after its demise, via a distinct geological layer.
