Alumna Wins Prestigious Rising Star Award
We are thrilled to announce that one of our exceptional alumna, Laura Masters, has been awarded the prestigious Elouise Carden Rising Star Award for Post-Production. A 2015 graduate of our BA program, Laura has carved out a successful career in television, currently serving as an Assistant Editor on the beloved British soap Coronation Street.
The Elouise Carden Rising Star Award, presented by Women in Film and TV in collaboration with Radiant Post Production and Picture Shop, recognises young women who have made outstanding contributions in the field of post-production. Laura is not only the third recipient in the UK but the first woman from Scotland to receive the honour. Reflecting on her win, Laura said, “I’m still shocked to have won it. This is my first ever television award, and it means so much to me, both personally and professionally.”
Laura's journey to success has not been without its challenges. After completing her degree, it took her four years to break into the television industry, something she speaks candidly about. “Starting out was tough. It’s a very established industry, and it’s often about who you know, not what you know,” she explained. Laura worked in retail and hospitality until she could land freelance TV work, showing her perseverance and drive.
Her willingness to seek opportunities outside of her home country was a key factor in her win. “I didn’t just stay in Scotland for work; I’ve worked in Cardiff, London, and now Manchester. It shows potential employers that I’m open to bigger opportunities,” Laura shared. She encourages current students and new entrants to follow her example. “My advice is to be open to working away from home, as some of the best jobs I've had have been outside my comfort zone.”
James Wilson, Curriculum Head: Broadcasting at City of Glasgow College, praised Laura’s achievement, saying, “Laura deserves this recognition. She was a great student and since graduating she has shown exactly the kind of drive and resilience required for success in the television industry.”
Another significant contribution to her award was her popular LinkedIn newsletter series, The Uncharted Freelancer, which she writes to support freelancers in television. “The newsletter got noticed because it shows I take the time to give back to others. I want to help people get a start in this industry and share advice on freelancing in general,” Laura explained. Her newsletter covers topics such as financial management, self-promotion, and finding job opportunities. She emphasised the importance of helping others in the industry, saying, “I don't have an ego. Everyone should help each other and not see others as competition.”
When asked about her new role on Coronation Street, Laura could not hide her excitement. “It’s a massive privilege to be here. My family are huge Corrie fans, and my mum burst out crying when I told her I got the job. One of the cast members even treated me to Sunday lunch during my first week!” While she enjoys all aspects of the job, she is particularly honoured to work on such a beloved programme, alongside a talented post-production team.
Reflecting on her time as a student, Laura credits the technical skills and industry insights she gained in her programme. However, she also shared a key piece of wisdom that has helped her throughout her career: “The most valuable lesson I learned was, ‘If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.’ It’s important to always show up prepared, but also be honest if something unexpected comes up.”
Despite her rising success, Laura remains a private person, preferring to keep her professional and personal lives separate. “A lot of people in my personal life don’t even know I work in TV,” she said. “My neighbours probably wonder why I disappear with a suitcase every so often!”
Her final words of advice for aspiring TV professionals? “Be patient, work hard, and make a LinkedIn account—it’s free! I wouldn’t be where I am without it. And don’t be afraid to travel for work, as it may lead to some of the best opportunities you’ll ever have.”
Laura’s career, dedication to helping others, and recent award make her an inspiring role model for anyone entering the television industry. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and look forward to seeing her career flourish.
