College Cabin Crew Students Take Training to New Heights in Manchester
Cabin crew students from the College have been gaining hands-on industry experience during a specialist training visit to SkyPeople Training in Manchester.
The annual trip provides students with the opportunity to build on their classroom learning while developing advanced, real-world skills in a professional aviation training environment. The facility, used by leading airlines, features a range of aircraft simulators representing different fleets.
During the intensive training programme, students worked across multiple aircraft types, including Airbus A320, A330 and Boeing 737 models. They gained practical experience in both routine and emergency procedures, including operating and managing aircraft doors, arming and disarming systems, and handling overwing exits.
A key highlight of the course was the opportunity to undertake advanced safety training. Students practised emergency slide evacuations, tackled simulated onboard fires, and learned how to safely assist passengers in smoke-filled cabin scenarios. Outside the aircraft environment, they also participated in life raft and survival exercises, further strengthening their emergency response capabilities.
The experience extended beyond technical training. Students developed essential professional skills by preparing for travel, managing their time effectively, and staying in a crew-style hotel environment, mirroring the day-to-day realities of cabin crew roles.
Kirsty Thornton, Travel and Tourism Lecturer said:
"Allowing students an opportunity outside the classroom to experience industry-standard drills in a simulated aircraft environment, including smoke scenarios, door drills and full evacuation procedures gives a full understanding of the demands of the role. This kind of immersive training builds not only technical competence but calmness, teamwork and decision-making skills essential for a career in aviation. Something that cannot be replicated by theory alone. "
Feedback from SkyPeople Training staff was overwhelmingly positive, with students praised for their in-depth knowledge, professionalism and engagement. Particular recognition was given to their presentation, with the group described as “immaculate in their uniforms”, a key attribute within the aviation industry.
This annual training visit continues to play a vital role in preparing our students for careers in aviation, equipping them with the confidence, skills and industry insight needed to succeed in a competitive global sector.
