College Furniture Students Shine at V&A Dundee
A group of talented furniture students from City of Glasgow College were given a rare and exciting opportunity when one of their own creations was showcased at the V&A Museum in Dundee. The display, part of the annual Craftex celebration, highlighted the remarkable skill, creativity, and craftsmanship of students across the College.
The event, attended by distinguished guests including the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Dr. Jacqueline McLaren, and the Lord Provost of Dundee, Bill Campbell, also featured representatives from the Trades House of Glasgow, including Deacon Convener John Fyffe MBE, as well as City of Glasgow College staff. Guests were welcomed to celebrate the exceptional work of emerging makers, including furniture students who are set to graduate this Monday.
Craftex, organised in partnership with the Trades House of Glasgow and the city’s colleges, provides an annual platform for students to showcase their creativity across more than fifty disciplines, from graphic design and floristry to cake decorating and makeup artistry. It offers budding artists and designers the opportunity for professional recognition, with awards judged by industry experts.
The furniture display offered a glimpse into the next generation of design talent, featuring reinterpretations of iconic pieces by designers such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, alongside traditional making techniques exemplified in works like the Orkney Chair. Among the highlights was the Tsunami Bench by Robin Frowley, winner of the 2025 Craftex Gold Medal.
“This display reflects how our students continue to draw inspiration from the craftsmanship of renowned designers while developing their own unique approaches,” said lecturer Scott Harvey. “It is a privilege to see their hard work recognised at such a prestigious venue.”
More than 55 students also visited the exhibition, taking part in guided tours of the Garden Future Design Exhibition and the Verdant Museum, gaining further inspiration and insight into contemporary design.
The College extends its thanks to Craftex, the Trades House of Glasgow, and all the staff and students who contributed to this outstanding showcase, including featured designers Daniel White, David Robinson, Douglas Thomas, Emily Noble, Emmaly Crimmel, Jakub Jasinski, Laura Gardner, Mina Brenna, Robin Frowley, Sandra Pryde, and Tilly Russell.
This display is a shining example of how Glasgow’s creative industries are cultivating the designers and makers of tomorrow.
