College Students Make Their Mark at Glasgow Weekend in Nuremberg
Students from City of Glasgow College represented the city with pride during a recent visit to Nuremberg as part of the annual Glasgow Weekend, celebrating the strong and long-standing relationship between the two twin cities.
The visit took place from Friday 9 January to Monday 12 January and gave hospitality students the opportunity to gain hands-on international experience in a professional setting. Funding for flights was provided by Glasgow City Council, with accommodation supported by Nuremberg City Council, highlighting a shared commitment to developing young talent through international collaboration.
Students Josh Hanley, Maurizio Crolla, Reyhan Hoque and Phil Milne, accompanied by lecturer Laura-Anne McEwan, visited sister college Schule 7 and worked at the prestigious Le Méridien Grand Hotel. The students played an active role in the set-up and delivery of the Burns Supper, as well as supporting brunch service, gaining valuable experience in large-scale banqueting and event hospitality.
The Burns Supper was attended by the Lord Provost, making the event a particularly special occasion. As part of the weekend, students also attended the ceilidh as guests, allowing them to experience both the operational and customer sides of hospitality and gain a fuller understanding of the guest journey.
The visit builds on a partnership that has been in place for many years, with Glasgow and Nuremberg celebrating 40 years as twin cities in 2024. The collaboration continues to grow, with four Schule 7 students set to take part in a student exchange programme at City of Glasgow College this March.
Lecturer Laura-Anne McEwan said:
“This experience was incredibly valuable for our students. They worked to a very high standard in a real international hospitality environment and represented the College and the city brilliantly. Opportunities like this build confidence, develop professional skills and show students just how transferable their learning really is.”
The Glasgow Weekend provided students with the opportunity to develop key skills in teamwork, professionalism and international hospitality, while also forming friendships with peers from another country. Their hard work and positive attitude made a lasting impression and reflected the strength of the partnership between the two cities.
