COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WELCOME STUDENTS BACK TO GLASGOW

Glasgow’s Higher and Further Education sector, together with the City Council, has united to welcome students to the new academic year.

A new “Welcome to Glasgow” digital campaign launched today brings together students and staff from the city’s eight institutions to help those new to the city and those returning explore everything it has to offer.

“Welcome to Glasgow” provides inspiration for students to discover Glasgow, but also reinforces COVID-19 messaging to keep the community safe.

The campaign, along with specific information provided by individual institutions, complements a Scottish Government course that helps students keep themselves and others as safe as possible.

The city’s colleges and universities are following Scottish Government advice to do everything they can to protect students, staff and the public in a bid to keep the spread of the virus to a minimum. Action already taken on campuses includes:

  • A “blended” approach of both on campus and online teaching, with no large class sizes or lectures in person.
  • Mandatory face coverings when indoors.
  • Enhanced cleaning.
  • Hand sanitising stations throughout buildings.
  • Students having access to support and welfare services, both in person and online.

All students are also being encouraged to get two vaccinations if they haven’t already done so. To assist students, the NHS is operating pop-up vaccination centres on campuses and across the city. Students are also being asked to get tested twice a week, with asymptomatic test kits provided.

Most international students will be required to test as part of their travel arrangements. UK-based students are encouraged to test before they travel.

In a joint statement, the institutions said:

“We are delighted to have students back on campus. We want to give them the warmest welcome and help them discover everything Glasgow has to offer.

“It’s also our responsibility to keep everyone safe at this time and we are working together to ensure the wellbeing of our students, staff and wider community.

“We have gone above and beyond to put in measures to make sure our campuses and halls of residences are kept clean and in a state that reduces the risk of the virus spreading.

“Most importantly we are working with our students to offer the guidance and support they need to continue with their studies and to enjoy their learning experience while at the same time keeping safe.

“Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community will help protect the city of Glasgow and its people”.
