Glasgow 850 Student Bronze Art Medal Exhibition Celebrates the City’s Heritage
City of Glasgow College is proud to celebrate the launch of the Glasgow 850 Student Bronze Art Medal Exhibition, marking 850 years of our remarkable city.
The exhibition was officially opened with guests including Vice Dean Frances McMenamin and Neil Baxter from The Merchants House of Glasgow. The event showcases the exceptional creativity and craftsmanship of Jewellery students from City of Glasgow College, who were tasked with designing bronze medals inspired by the heritage, people, and enduring spirit of Glasgow.
In a highlight of the evening, the Lord Provost, Councillor Dr Jacqueline McLaren, accepted the winning medal into the City Chambers’ permanent collection — a fitting tribute to Glasgow’s milestone anniversary and a proud moment for everyone involved.
Claire Fairley, the winning student also received a limited-edition Glasgow 850 anniversary plate, created by renowned ceramic artist Ruth Impey. Only 100 of these plates have been produced. All participating students were presented with a specially designed poster by Dr Edward F. H. Chisnall, whose artwork beautifully captures the essence of Glasgow 850.
Claire commented “I was so proud to be invited along with my classmates to the launch of the exhibition and present the Lord Provost with my medal. It was an amazing opportunity to have taken part in and I am extremely grateful and honoured for having received the Glasgow 850 plate from the Lord Provost, especially being a Glaswegian”
Congratulations to all students who took part in this unique commemorative project. Their talent and passion shine through each medal, celebrating Glasgow’s rich cultural legacy.
The Glasgow 850 Student Bronze Art Medal Exhibition is open to the public at the historic Glasgow City Chambers and will run until the New Year.
