Industry recognition for next generation photographers

The skill, talent and hard work of two BA Honours Photography students at City of Glasgow College has been recognised by the Association of Photographers.

Geraldine McLure and Liam Scott both won gold medals at this year’s AOP Student Awards. Geraldine won for her images in the category: Things, with Liam winning in the People category.

A total of nine BA (Hons) Photography students reached the finals. Lecturer, Iain Smart, who was shortlisted for lecturer of the year, said:

“It is a proud moment to see students and graduates of our college achieve recognition within the industry they have trained hard for. To have their work acknowledged by professionals and experts at this level is testament to their talent and commitment. We wish them well for the future.”

BA (Hons) Photography student Geraldine, who won gold for her entry titled ‘The Music of What Happened’, said:

“In my final year project, I hoped to express moments and feelings that I could not articulate verbally; instinctive responses to things observed and experienced.  In a time when personal freedoms were restricted due to the global pandemic and when anxiety was often present, finding temporary peace in a moment was welcome and provided a sense of freedom and a form of mindfulness. I am delighted that my work has been recognised by the industry and to have won the award.”

After completing her HND in Aberdeen, Geraldine believed it was important to continue to develop her practice.

“City of Glasgow College visited my place of study and gave an inspiring insight into the BA (Hons) Photography course which motivated me to apply.

“The lecturers are really invested in the students and the facilities are incredible. This was put to the test during the pandemic and the staff did everything possible to support us. I have learnt so much and now have a better understanding of what I am trying to express visually.”

“In the future, I hope to work towards compiling a strong body of work that could be exhibited in a gallery and published in book form. I have been lucky to have had such a great group of fellow students and a supportive teaching staff; hopefully, I have made lasting friendships.”

The Association of Photographers (AOP) is the UK’s leading organisation representing photographers and image-making professionals working in the creative industries. The AOP Student awards help in providing graduates with that all important step up to, and visibility in, the professional arena.
