Jewellery Student Creates Inaugural Molendinar Medal for Outstanding Service
We’re proud to share the success of HND Jewellery student Joe Coyne, who was selected to design and produce the inaugural Molendinar Medal for Outstanding Service 2025 on behalf of the Glasgow Medieval Trust.
The prestigious medal was presented to Cathy McMaster, founder of the Trust, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to preserving Glasgow’s medieval heritage. The presentation took place at the Glasgow City Chambers, where the medal was awarded by the Lord Provost of Glasgow following the launch of Neil Baxter’s latest publication.
Neil Baxter, who commissioned Joe to create the medal, provided an invaluable professional opportunity for him to showcase his skills, creativity, and craftsmanship at a high-profile civic event.
Reflecting on the experience, Joe said: "It’s been an incredible honour to design and make the first Molendinar Medal. Working on a project that connects craftsmanship with Glasgow’s history has been a fantastic experience."
The ceremony was also attended by the College Principal, who spoke of the importance of heritage and the enduring value of traditional craft skills in Glasgow – values we are proud to nurture through our Craft and Design programmes.
Lisa McGovern, Curriculum Head for Craft & Design, added: "We’re so proud of Joe’s achievement. Opportunities like this highlight the exceptional talent of our students and the enduring importance of craft skills in celebrating and preserving Glasgow’s heritage."
The event was a truly memorable occasion, celebrating the city’s rich heritage, our students’ exceptional talent, and the College’s role in sustaining Glasgow’s craft traditions for future generations.
