Kirk MacRae Appointed Commanding Officer of HMS SCOTIA

City of Glasgow College is celebrating the remarkable achievement of one of its own, Lecturer in Nautical Science and STEM, Kirk MacRae, who has been selected for promotion to Command HMS SCOTIA from 4 September this year.

Kirk brings with him an impressive naval career, having served in the Royal Navy from 2005 to 2022, rising to the role of Principal Warfare Officer and Specialist Navigator. Since transitioning to the Maritime Reserves in June 2022, he has continued to serve with distinction, most recently as Executive Officer at HMS DALRIADA.

His new role as Commanding Officer of HMS SCOTIA marks a significant milestone in Kirk’s military journey, one he has aspired to since joining the Royal Navy two decades ago:

“I was delighted to hear the news from my Career Manager and appointer, command is a rare opportunity and a tremendous privilege. It is especially meaningful to return to Rosyth, where I began my seagoing career with HMS GRIMSBY.”

Kirk’s leadership experience, in both operational and educational contexts, makes him a valued member of the Nautical and STEM Faculty at City of Glasgow College. His dual background allows him to bring a unique perspective to cadet training and curriculum development. “My Reservist work continues to inform my teaching,” Kirk explains. “There is strong synergy between the Merchant and Royal Navy. We share common standards and priorities, which benefits our students.”

His story is a compelling example of how professional and military service can intertwine, offering rich opportunities for leadership and lifelong learning. Kirk encourages any students who feel inspired by his journey to explore careers in the Armed Forces: “Reach out to the Armed Forces Network here at the College or contact HMS DALRIADA or HMS SCOTIA.
