MERCHANT NAVY DAY 2025

City of Glasgow College proudly hosted a solemn Merchant Navy Day ceremony at its Riverside Campus today, stepping in while George Square undergoes renovations. As the UK’s largest maritime training facility and a recognised Centre of Excellence, Riverside Campus trains over 40% of the nation’s Merchant Navy officers - making it a particularly fitting setting for this commemoration. The event honoured the men and women of the UK’s Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleet who gave their lives in wartime.

The service began with cadets Leo Barlow and Kallista Knight from the College’s Nautical Faculty reading the names from the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour, Volumes 1 and 2, paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice at sea. This was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony, accompanied by the moving strains of Eternal Father Strong to Save.

Dr Paul Little CBE, DL, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of City of Glasgow College, read A Seaman’s Prayer by Ian A. Millar, reflecting on the courage and faith of those who navigate the perils of the oceans.

The Principal also recited Laurence Binyon’s poignant lines from For the Fallen: “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old…” A two-minute silence followed, during which the Merchant Navy Standard was dipped in salute, and Pipe Major David Wotherspoon played Flowers of the Forest as the standard was raised.

The Rt Hon Lord Provost Councillor Jacqueline McLaren attended the ceremony, welcoming cadets, veterans, and their families. She emphasised the importance of remembering those who served in the two World Wars and other conflicts, highlighting the courage and resilience of those who risked their lives to keep the nation safe.

Former Armed Forces Champion Phil Greene read Eileen Mahoney’s In Waters Deep, a moving tribute to those resting beneath the waves.

Merchant Navy Day honours the sacrifices of the past but also celebrates the enduring spirit of those who continue to serve at sea. Today’s ceremony at City of Glasgow College’s Riverside Campus was a poignant reminder of the bravery, dedication, and unbreakable resolve of the UK’s seafarers.
