THE PRINCESS ROYAL APPOINTED INAUGURAL CHANCELLOR AT CITY OF GLASGOW COLLEGE

It is with great pride and honour that City of Glasgow College announces that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has accepted an invitation to become our inaugural Chancellor.

This royal seal of approval marks a high watermark in the College’s long and illustrious history and deepens a longstanding relationship between Her Royal Highness and Scotland’s largest college.

The Princess Royal has an enduring and distinguished association with Scotland, the Merchant Navy, the Royal Navy, and Scottish maritime and engineering more generally. Her appointment as Chancellor reflects the close alignment between those interests and the College’s role as a flagship educational institution for those organisations and sectors. 

The Princess Royal has visited the College’s Maritime Campus and legacy institutions on multiple occasions:

In October 2019, Her Royal Highness visited our Maritime campus to mark 50 years of maritime education and training at the College; in November 2021, she attended the opening reception for the College’s International Maritime Hub during COP26, marking her first engagement of the conference; most recently, in November 2023, Her Royal Highness undertook a working visit to our Maritime campus, where she toured the College’s specialist maritime facilities, discussed the findings of our applied maritime research, and met students, apprentices, school pupils, staff, and leading employers from the maritime, shipbuilding, and defence industries. 

As Chancellor, Her Royal Highness will have the opportunity to further engage with the College students and its four Faculties.

“Her Royal Highness’s relationship with the College has developed over many years and each visit has provided a further opportunity to showcase the extraordinary talent of our students and apprentices, the expertise of our staff and the supersized contribution our College makes to Scotland, the UK, and globally.

“We are deeply honoured that Her Royal Highness has accepted this prestigious role and are immensely proud that she will become our very first Chancellor. She is a tireless champion of global seafaring, maritime, skills, and innovation.

“At a time when maritime, shipbuilding, engineering and defence capability are of such sovereign importance to the UK, we have much to gain from her wise insight.”
