Sports students make college cup history

City of Glasgow College brings home the Scottish Student Sport College Cup for the first time.

The students triumphed after a series of encounters, across a variety of different sports events, against Fife and Edinburgh Colleges.

A team of 45 students represented the college in men and women’s volleyball and basketball, men’s football, and mixed badminton. Overall the team won three golds in men and women’s volleyball, and women’s basketball; two silver medals for men’s basketball and mixed badminton, and a bronze medal in men’s football.

Andrew Kirk, Sports Co-ordinator for City of Glasgow College, said:

“This is the biggest sporting event on the calendar for college sport, so having it back after a two year absence because of the pandemic is incredible. And to win the overall trophy for the first time is fantastic. It’s such a great feeling and is testament to the great work of both our student teams and coaching staff.

“Student membership of our sports teams is spread across our four faculties, which is a unique achievement for a college. Our core aim is to be inclusive, offering every student, on any course, the chance to compete against other institutions. Our membership reflects that now more than ever.”

Two of the student men’s basketball players, Faraz Masih and Joel Edzii, who were interviewed after their match against Edinburgh College, set a great example when they said that ‘taking part and having fun is what it’s all about.’

“Credit goes to both Edinburgh and Fife Colleges for their sportsmanship throughout the tournament,” added Andrew. Winning and losing is all part of sport, so it was good to hear such a positive attitude from both Faraz and Joel. Those types of values are incredibly important in everyday life, as well as future careers.”
