Students raise over £14,500 for charities through live events

Students across City of Glasgow College's Events Management, BA International Tourism, Hospitality and Events, and Fitness, Health and Exercise programmes have raised more than £14,500 for charities through a series of live fundraising events, sports festivals and community initiatives.

The activities formed part of assessed coursework and professional practice modules, giving students the opportunity to plan, promote, budget and deliver live events to professional standards. Many groups also chose to donate surplus funds to charity while working closely with community partners, demonstrating the College's commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.

The fundraising supported a wide range of organisations, including Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity, Refuweegee, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Cash for Kids, Women's Aid, Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH), Shelter Glasgow, Age Scotland, Alzheimer Scotland, Breast Cancer Now, CHAS and SMS 17 Charity.

Among the highlights was the annual Santathon, organised by HND Fitness, Health and Exercise students, which raised £1,200 for SMS 17 Charity through a festive-themed fundraising event combining physical activity with community engagement.

NQ Fitness, Health and Exercise students also organised a Christmas Sports Festival as part of their professional practice module, raising £2,239.52, while additional HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise activities contributed a further £533.25 to charitable causes.

Across the Events Management and Tourism programmes, students delivered a diverse programme of live events, including themed evenings, wellness experiences, creative workshops, school partnerships and intergenerational projects with local care homes. Students also represented the College at community events such as the Kiltwalk 2026, further supporting charitable causes while promoting the College across Glasgow.

Donna McGroarty, Curriculum Head for Hospitality & Events, said:

"These projects showcase the very best of real-world learning. Our students demonstrate professionalism, creativity and resilience while developing the practical skills employers value. It's especially rewarding to see them using those skills to make a genuine difference to charities and communities."

Through live industry projects, City of Glasgow College continues to equip students with the practical experience, confidence and employability skills needed for successful careers while making a positive impact in communities across Scotland.
