TV awards’ win for creative industries’ students

Two television graduates at City of Glasgow College have won awards at this year’s Royal Television Society’s (RTS) Scotland Student Television Awards.

BA Television graduate, Niall MacRae, won the Camera Craft Award for his camera work on Norland Winds, and HND Television graduate, Rocco Rossetti, won the Sound Craft Award for his work on Refuweegee.

Delighted at winning in the hotly contested craft category, Rocco said:

“Winning the RTS award was such a surreal feeling, and a shock, as I didn't expect to win at all. Working on Refuweegee was a great experience, not just for my skills but also to meet such amazing people. During my time at college I got to meet the best friends and the best lecturers, and will forever be thankful for all their help throughout the years.”

Jacquie Shaw, Associate Dean for Media at City of Glasgow College, said:

“Our industry depends on the growing skills and talent of our young people. I am very proud of Niall and Rocco’s achievements, as are their lecturers who have helped shape and develop the creativity and technical expertise which saw them win in these categories.

“Our students consistently perform well at the RTS awards which provide an ideal platform for them to improve their skills while gaining real-life industry experience."

The college also had two films nominated. Norland Winds by Gavin Hunter, Michael Devlin, Niall MacRae & Ross Hunter for best Drama; and The Middle Man With A Herd by Iain Mackenzie, Neale Mcintosh, Hannah McLintock & William Gordon.

The RTS Scotland Student Television Awards celebrate the best audio-visual work created by students in animation, scripted and non-scripted categories. The judges look for strong storytelling, creativity, innovation, outstanding visual and aural creativity with high-quality craft skills, and a strong emphasis on originality.

Stephen O’Donnell, chair of RTS Scotland, added:

“This year’s RTS Scotland Student Awards highlighted the incredible filmmaking talent that continues to flow through Scotland’s universities and colleges. All the winners and nominees brought something unique to the table, and it’s safe to say each category was hotly-contested.”
