Introduction to the Built Environment NQ (Level 5)

The purpose of this course is to give students an opportunity to learn about the technical and professional side of the construction sector. This will allow students to gain an appreciation of a different aspect of, and a choice of progression within, this highly rewarding industry. Students will also develop wider skills and attitudes that will enhance their general employment.  

You will explore the range of work carried out in the construction industry and the roles which contribute to a sustainable built environment.  You will investigate the diverse architectural styles and building types commonly found in the UK and consider the principles involved in building design.

You will determine how client requirements and external restrictions influence building design. Working collaboratively, you will produce a project plan to determine communication and collaboration methods between members of the design team. Using a variety of digital tools and processes, you will create concept ideas and a design solution to meet the client’s brief.

You will explore sustainability and consider ways in which global, national and local communities are affected.  You will investigate the basic techniques and methods commonly adopted in sustainable building design and construction of buildings and explore how structural stability is achieved safely during the construction process

Your employability skills will evolve across this course.  You will develop working practices that will enhance your job prospects including good time-keeping, health & safety awareness, team working and carrying out quality checks.  You will learn self-evaluation skills and how to adapt your performance in response to feedback. 

Entry Requirements

This course will suit students with Maths and English at National 4 and a technical subject e.g. Graphics (preferred) or a Science.

You will be expected to exhibit good communication skills and be willing to work as part of a team.  You should be able to act on instructions and be committed to working in a manner that supports health and safety at work.

Progression Pathways

This course will allow students to make a more informed choice of progression within this highly rewarding industry.  Graduates of this course will be able to progress onto Built Environment NQ at Level 6, before progressing onto HNC and HND.

This course provides an ideal foundation for a diverse range of careers out with the usual trades route in the Construction sector.  With further qualifications, you could embark on a career in Construction Management, Architectural Technology or Building and Civil Engineering.
